Peacock's tail

Author: Codru Vrabie

Today is Constitution Day and I was going to write something about it. But I don't have the mind for it. I'll take a rain check when I have more inspiration. I prefer to leave here a sliver of how I felt yesterday, around 2:00 in the afternoon, at the end of the event marking 10 years of "Leaders for Justice." I was all gooey inside, as the American says. Now I know what a candy melt feels like on the inside-not how we taste it, but how it feels itself.

Yesterday, from 10:00 a.m., the "People of Justice" took the stage of the Elizabeth Theatre. They told their life stories. Powerful. Very powerful! And they followed each other at a dizzying pace, because every 7-8 minutes you heard about another adventure from another speaker. The flow from one topic to the next was impeccable, the technical level of "conversation" with the audience was most appropriate, and the emotional level of the chaining of characters and ideas struck a chord with me.

I can't wait for the recordings to come out, because I know I have material there for my future trainings. It wasn't just members of the "Leaders for Justice" community who took the stage, but also our friends. This was a very inspired choice, because it was very clear that there is a concert of people, communities and movements with common values. That is to say, we did not put the tail on the plum, but we are simply on the same wavelength with several groups in Romanian society.

Towards evening, as I ruminated on the emotional intensity of what I saw and heard from the stage, I remembered peacocks. I had read about them in books, seen them on TV and in zoos. I wondered how big they could be, because the reality in a garden is very different from what you can perceive on TV. But once I saw a peacock open its tail! I was in the courtyard of Ion Ratiu's memorial house in Turda in 2014 or 2015. Nothing could have prepared me for that moment. It's unexpected, it's unique!

That's how I see what happened yesterday, December 7, at the Elisabeta Theatre. It's as if the Leaders for Justice community is a peacock that I feed from time to time, but I've known it since it was small. And I realize he's gotten big, I realize he has an impressive tail. But just yesterday I saw him showing off his tail-it's gorgeous! And the guests from outside the community are like pennies in a peacock's tail-they make it all the more spectacular!

This was the best present I could have gotten for Santa. Fa-bu-los! My heartfelt thanks to the people in and around the Leaders for Justice community for making yesterday morning's event possible. It doesn't even matter now what I wanted to write about Constitution Day 😉
