Who are the refugees in Romania? Where do they come from and what have they been through? What situations do they face once here? What are their chances of succeeding and integrating?
Ana Cojocaru and Andreea Lupascu work at the Romanian National Council for Refugees and tell the moving story of the "post-war struggle".
Andreea is a legal advisor at the Romanian National Council for Refugees, as part of a project that aims to facilitate the integration of refugees through counselling and advocacy with public institutions. In her spare time, she rides her bike for dozens of kilometres and wonders what it would be like to be an astronaut. Andreea believes in creativity, honesty and empathy and her vision of life can be summed up in the words of Viktor Frankl: "Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space lies our power to choose our response. In that space lies our ultimate freedom. Man's ultimate freedom is to choose his attitude in any set of circumstances."
Ana is an integration advisor in the same organisation. She graduated in law, but has spent the last few years studying related fields such as international relations and sustainable development. She has lived and worked in Bucharest, New York and Bratislava. Her main interests are human rights, social inclusion and Eastern European culture. Ana would like to see a world where we are united in diversity and where every person has the right to a dignified existence, so her core values are justice, responsibility and respect for human dignity.
On Saturday, 7 December 2019, Ana and Andreea took the stage of the Elizabeth Theatre at People of Justice | 10 Years of Leaders for Justice to tell us about their daily work and who the refugees next door are.
